{"id":10175,"date":"2022-02-06T22:32:30","date_gmt":"2022-02-06T14:02:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.exitinternational.net\/?p=10175"},"modified":"2022-02-14T00:48:01","modified_gmt":"2022-02-13T16:18:01","slug":"marie-flemings-partner-launches-irish-wing-of-euthanasia-body-exit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/marie-flemings-partner-launches-irish-wing-of-euthanasia-body-exit\/","title":{"rendered":"Marie Fleming&#8217;s Partner Launches Irish Wing of Euthanasia Body Exit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marie Fleming&#8217;s Partner Launches Irish Wing of Euthanasia Body Exit\u00a0group that provides guidance on assisted suicide has officially launched in Ireland, ahead of a national debate on voluntary assisted dying.<\/p>\n<p>Tom Curran, the partner of the late right-to-die campaigner Marie Fleming, is to lead the <a href=\"https:\/\/exitinternational.ie\/\">Irish branch of Exit International<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It follows the Dail decision to establish a special Oireachtas committee to examine voluntary assisted dying. It is expected to begin work this year.<\/p>\n<p>Exit International was formed in 1997 by Philip Nitschke, an Australian doctor and creator of the\u00a0Sarco pod, a euthanasia device. Fleming had advanced multiple sclerosis and argued that the law infringed her constitutional rights because the severity of her disability prevented her from ending her own life without assistance.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exitinternational.net\/marie-flemings-partner-launches-irish-wing-of-euthanasia-body-exit\/marieandtom-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10176\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-10176\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exitinternational.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MarieAndTom-1-620x266.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MarieAndTom-1-620x266.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MarieAndTom-1-300x129.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MarieAndTom-1-220x94.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MarieAndTom-1-130x56.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/MarieAndTom-1.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court ruled that there was no constitutional right to commit suicide or be assisted to die, but said there was nothing to stop legislation with appropriate safeguards being introduced to deal with such cases.<\/p>\n<p>Fleming died later in 2013, aged 59.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI went down that path with Marie because it gave her the freedom to make that decision, to put a plan in place, and [then] we just got on with living,\u201d Curran said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarie was now in control and could make that decision any time she wanted.<\/p>\n<p>The only problem was that I would need to help, and that was illegal.<\/p>\n<p>The opportunity to have a peaceful death should be available to anybody who wants to take that option, and if people don\u2019t want to take it I would support that every bit as strongly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Curran says he is contacted by dozens of Irish people each year seeking information about ending their lives.<\/p>\n<p>He believes the law discriminates against those who are unable to do so by themselves.<\/p>\n<p>A person convicted of helping another to take their own life faces a sentence of up to 14 years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-2605\" src=\"https:\/\/www.exitinternational.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5-620x483.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"483\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5-620x483.jpg 620w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5-600x468.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5-220x172.jpg 220w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5-130x101.jpg 130w, https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/exit\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Tom-Philip-5.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">Philip Nitschke &amp; Tom Curran, Ireland, 2013<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/5694e422-86cb-11ec-9c9e-c5f8451b2970?shareToken=cbabee089d57d6c8e9832d0e0259f9d1\"><em>The Sunday Times<\/em><\/a> launched a campaign to legalise assisted dying last November when Vicky Phelan, the cervical cancer campaigner, appealed for terminally ill people to have the right to choose medical assistance in dying.<\/p>\n<p>Janie Lazar, from the advocacy group End of Life Ireland, believes there is growing support for voluntary assisted dying legislation in Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Marie Fleming&#8217;s Partner Launches Irish Wing of Euthanasia Body Exit<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut death is still a taboo subject,\u201d Lazar said. \u201cNobody likes to talk about it, and it\u2019s not a vote winner, but this has got to be dealt with because dying people who want this choice cannot wait. Able and disabled people want to be treated equally. People with terminal and progressive illnesses want to be treated equally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added: \u201cWho are we to judge or deny another\u2019s choice? Irrespective of whether you\u2019re able or disabled, legislation can provide choice and also protect everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brendan O\u2019Shea, a GP in Co Kildare and adjunct assistant professor at Trinity College Dublin\u2019s school of medicine, claims Ireland is increasingly an outlier in not having medical assistance with dying available as an end-of-life choice.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Shea, who is a member of Irish Doctors supporting Medical Assistance in Dying, added that some Irish people are forced to travel overseas for assistance in dying, often when they are suffering from significant pain, and at considerable financial expense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople do have this choice in other countries and they use it in small but consistent numbers,\u201d he said. \u201cAs we look across the globe over the last five to ten years the number of jurisdictions that are bringing this in is gathering momentum, and so it is important for us to consider this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Exit Editor&#8217;s Note<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Irish people will still be forced to travel overseas for assistance in dying if Ireland does not bring in a Swiss style law that allows everyone of sound mind to access to a good death, not only those with &lt; 6 months to live (the terminally ill).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Marie Fleming&#8217;s Partner Launches Irish Wing of Euthanasia Body Exit\u00a0group that provides guidance on assisted suicide has officially launched in Ireland, ahead of a national debate on voluntary assisted dying.
