An 104-year-old scientist feared for the future of Earth and claimed ‘there are just too many of us’ before he died by assisted suicide this month.<\/p>\n
David Goodall, an accomplished British-Australian ecologist, inflamed the euthanasia debate worldwide when he killed himself at a Swiss clinic on May 10.<\/p>\n
Now the controversial figure who supported him to his death has revealed Dr Goodall ‘agreed… he was getting out, just in time’.<\/p>\n
‘There are just too many of us,’ said David Goodall, 104. He traveled to Switzerland and died by assisted suicide about a fortnight ago, on May 10, after listening to Beethoven<\/p>\n
He did not have a funeral as he did not believe in the afterlife.<\/p>\n
In an extraordinary statement, euthanasia advocate Dr Philip Nitschke outlined Dr Goodall’s concerns about the world’s booming population.<\/p>\n
‘He considered his own decision to ‘exit’ of his own accord as his personal contribution to addressing over-population,’ Dr Nitschke’s statement said.<\/p>\n
The Exit International campaigner this week released Dr Goodall’s final letter to Australia and a short statement describing some of his last musings.<\/p>\n
He revealed Dr Goodall had recently ‘repeated concerns’ about the planet, particularly unchecked population growth.<\/p>\n
‘There are just too many of us, consuming too much, changing too many ecosystems too fast,’ Dr Goodall was quoted saying.<\/p>\n
The lauded scientist pointed to climate change as evidence of damage unchecked growth was doing to the Earth.<\/p>\n
‘It is too late to revert back to the relatively calm and evenly balanced systems we had enjoyed up to the 1950’s,’ Dr Goodall was quoted saying.<\/p>\n
‘All we can do now is to adapt to the resulting changes and the damages we caused, us in the first world to an overwhelming degree being responsible for this.’<\/p>\n
