The Independent<\/a><\/em><\/strong> has reported that a Montreal man to be among first to use Canada\u2019s revised medical aid in dying law – Yves Monette – 62, has been granted permission to receive medical aid in dying from an authorised doctor on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

This came after Mr Monette was previously denied the option given the fact that he did not meet the criteria.<\/p>\n

But in March, the country\u2019s lawmakers voted to expand the country\u2019s laws to allow intolerably suffering Canadians who are not terminally ill to also end their life. [Editor’s note – This shift in direction made it possible for this] Montreal man to be among first to use Canada\u2019s revised medical aid in dying law.<\/p>\n

In two years, the law would also expand to those \u201csuffering solely from grievous and irremediable mental illnesses,\u201d CTV News reports.<\/p>\n

Mr Monette was diagnosed nearly three years ago with a neurological disease that will eventually leave him with a permanent form of dementia.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne day I\u2019ll wake up and I won\u2019t know where I am anymore,\u201d Mr Monette told CTV News. \u201cYou know what? I don\u2019t want to live that way.\u201d<\/p>\n

Debilitating symptoms have already developed for him following his diagnosis \u2013 including losing the ability to read, difficulty with language, and physical tremors. The worst symptom for him, though, was the fact that he now has to wear diapers.<\/p>\n

Mr Monette was granted approval to receive medical aid in dying in April after the legislation was expanded. This will be carried out by a doctor on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cI live my life fully and well. Each second, each minute is important,\u201d Mr Monette, who is a father and grandfather, told the publication. \u201cI would like to keep living, but how? I don\u2019t want to live like this.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medical aid in dying was Mr Monette\u2019s chosen path given his degenerative illness.<\/p>\n

One caveat to the legislation passed in Canada was that the person needed to be mentally competent in order to access medical aid in dying, which has influenced Mr Monette\u2019s timeline on making the health decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am apt, and I understand what it means to die. It\u2019s not like a movie, it\u2019s real,\u201d Mr Monette said.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, he will die while surrounded by family members and friends. He intends to donate his organs to help other people.<\/p>\n
