A proposed law to\u00a0allow voluntary death\u00a0for the terminally\u00a0ill has been labelled\u00a0\u201cbeg and grovel\u201d legislation by euthanasia pioneer Dr Philip Nitschke.<\/p>\n
The first doctor to administer euthanasia,\u00a0Nitschke\u00a0is holding public talks and instructional workshops on the subject with his pro-euthanasia group Exit International this week.<\/p>\n
On Thursday, about 30 members gathered in a\u00a0meeting room behind\u00a0St Andrew\u2019s church in Wellington to discuss in detail how to end their lives.<\/p>\n
Nitschke\u00a0said\u00a0all adults had a right to choose death\u00a0and,\u00a0 as populations aged, there were increasingly compelling social reasons to want to die.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis idea of waiting around till you\u2019re satisfying some very exhaustive and stringent requirements of levels of sickness, is going to be shown to be\u00a0wanting.\u201d<\/p>\n
Parliament is currently considering the\u00a0End of Life Choice bill, with the last of more than 3000 public oral submissions\u00a0being heard\u00a0on Monday.<\/p>\n
The bill would allow New Zealanders aged 18 and older who suffer from a terminal illness likely to end their life within six months, or a grievous and untreatable medical condition, to choose an assisted death.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat is a\u00a0privilege granted, that is not a right \u2026\u00a0I call it the \u2018beg and grovel\u2019 legislation,\u201d Nitschke said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou have to go and see a panel of doctors and convince them you\u2019re sick enough \u2026\u00a0that is, in the case of many of the laws we see,\u00a0when you\u2019re almost dead.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t get the idea that you\u2019re in control, because you\u2019re not in control.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nitschke\u00a0said there should only be two criteria to permit euthanasia: if a person was an adult, so they could understand the permanence of death, and that they were of sound mind.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t have to give a reason, it\u2019s a right to have these drugs.\u201d<\/p>\n
Exit International members have faced considerable scrutiny in recent years, with Wellington members\u00a0stopped in a police breath-testing checkpoint after a meeting in 2016. The checkpoint was later deemed unjustified by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.<\/p>\n
Wellington branch chairwoman\u00a0Susan Austen\u00a0was\u00a0in May found guilty\u00a0 on two charges of importing pet\u00a0euthaniser\u00a0pentobarbitone, after being acquitted of aiding the suicide of another member,\u00a0Annemarie\u00a0Treadwell.<\/p>\n
To prevent any legal issues on Thursday, attendees\u00a0signed a disclaimer confirming they would not take any notice of the information Nitschke was providing and would not record the workshop.<\/p>\n
Meetings will be held in Nelson on Saturday, and Auckland on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Police are aware of the Nitschke workshops, but a spokeswoman declined to answer further questions.<\/p>\n
Act MP David Seymour,\u00a0responsible for the End of Life Choice bill, warned against an approach to euthanasia that sat outside strict safeguards in law.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t think that you should be able to help someone end their life for social reasons \u2026\u00a0I don\u2019t think that it\u2019s right to help somebody end their life unless you have very strict oversight,\u00a0because if you don\u2019t have all the various safeguards like in the End of Life Choice bill, then\u00a0there is a possibility of abuse.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
