{"id":6279,"date":"2020-07-18T21:03:16","date_gmt":"2020-07-18T12:33:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.peacefulpillhandbook.com\/?p=6279"},"modified":"2021-09-20T22:52:24","modified_gmt":"2021-09-20T14:22:24","slug":"vad-survey-results","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.euthanasia.net\/pph\/vad-survey-results\/","title":{"rendered":"VAD Survey Results"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>VAD Survey by Dr David Swanton, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/david-swanton-8700982a\">Ethical Rights<\/a>, Canberra Australia<\/h2>\n<p>(Survey developed in conjunction with Dr Wendy Gunthorpe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straighttalkconsulting.org\/about-1\">Straight Talk Consulting<\/a>)<\/p>\n<h3>Survey Background<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Survey conducted: 27 July 2020 &#8211;\u00a0 27 February 2021<\/li>\n<li>Sent to World Federation of Right to Die Societies, Exit International, Dying with Dignity (DWD) and Voluntary Euthanasia Societies (VES), who then forwarded it to their members<\/li>\n<li>1640 responses worldwide, \u22481.5% response rate, error \u22643% (95% confidence)<\/li>\n<li>That is, given a response to a particular question of, for example 60%, we can be 95% sure that the true percentage of the population who would choose a response lies within the margin of error, that is between 57% and 63%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Demographics<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>60% Australia, 18% USA, 6% other European, 5% UK<\/li>\n<li>60% female, 92% were &gt;50y, and 40% were 70\u201379y<\/li>\n<li>76% not religious;<\/li>\n<li>68% have at least one higher degree<\/li>\n<li>45% belong to Exit, 43% to DWDs, 16% to VESs, and 13% to other organisations<\/li>\n<li>72% did not have disability; 29% of those had particular needs<\/li>\n<li>In Australia, 32% had no preferred political party. Supported parties were Greens (20%), Labor (18%), and Liberal (18%)<\/li>\n<li>Most people joined to obtain information, practical advice and support their organisation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img Results<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There is a need for VAD to be legalised.<\/li>\n<li>VAD advocates are mainly older, well-educated, not religious and generally not interested in travelling to another country to die.<\/li>\n<li>Regulatory systems should focus on permitting well-informed persons with decision making capacity making voluntary decisions to die.<\/li>\n<li>Less importance should be attached to being terminally ill, having doctors administer drugs, residency\/citizenship or having limited life expectancy.<\/li>\n<li>People with advance directives and those suffering unbearably, (not terminally ill) should have access to VAD.<\/li>\n<li>Doctors should be able to prescribe a lethal drug and non-doctors should be permitted to assist with VAD.<\/li>\n<li>Consideration should be given to expanding VAD regulation to give access to those suffering from mental illness, dementia, clinical depression and children.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Legalised VAD provides<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>reduced suffering<\/li>\n<li>comfort knowing that their end of life needs will be met and illegal options will be unnecessary<\/li>\n<li>peace of mind knowing that they won\u2019t suffer if their mental situation worsens with VAD-relevant advance directives won\u2019t require doctors for drug administration<br \/>\ncan have a spouse or partner present at their death<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img
